Unlock Your CPG Superpower: Understanding the P&L

In today’s high-stakes CPG landscape, a deep understanding of your financial numbers isn't just a good idea - it's a superpower. As the first installment of our "Finance 101 for CPG Brands" series, this webinar, hosted by Finaloop, provided an essential dive into the fundamentals of the Profit & Loss (P&L) statement. Jacob Becker, Finaloop's Head of Ecosystem Education, and experienced CPG finance leader Will Finkelstein shared critical insights to help founders, operators, and finance leads master their financials.

The Anatomy of Your Profit & Loss Statement

Jacob Becker began by breaking down the full anatomy of the P&L statement, explaining what it is, how to read it, and why it's absolutely essential for informed decision-making. The session covered every line item, from gross sales to net sales, gross margin to contribution margin, and finally down to EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization), providing a complete picture of profitability.

Accrual vs. Cash Accounting & SKU-Level COGS

Jacob also clarified key accounting concepts that can significantly impact your P&L, such as the difference between accrual and cash accounting. He emphasized why understanding your Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) at the SKU level is a game-changer, revealing how this granular insight can be the difference between successfully scaling your brand and unknowingly bleeding cash.

From Gross Margin to True Contribution & Common Pitfalls

Will Finkelstein added tactical insights directly from the brand side, underscoring the vital importance of financial discipline from day one. He warned that brands delaying this discipline often find themselves scrambling when investors or lenders come knocking, highlighting the need for proactive financial management.

Why Contribution Margin is King for CPG

One of the biggest takeaways from the session was a crucial distinction: gross margin alone doesn’t cut it. The conversation passionately argued that contribution margin - which subtracts all variable costs, including crucial elements like paid advertising—is a much clearer and more accurate indicator of how much each sale truly contributes to covering fixed costs and driving overall profit for a CPG brand.

Avoiding Cost Tracking and Forecasting Mistakes

The webinar also shed light on common pitfalls in cost tracking, effective returns management, and accurate subscription forecasting. Using real-world examples and benchmarks from Finaloop’s client base, Jacob and Will provided tangible, no-fluff advice on how to avoid these costly mistakes and optimize financial performance.

Take Control of Your CPG Brand's Financial Future

Whether your brand is pre-revenue or generating eight figures, understanding your P&L isn't just about staying compliant; it's about seizing control of your financial destiny.

This webinar, the first of a three-part series, offered founders and finance leaders the foundational knowledge to navigate their numbers with confidence. Next up: Working Capital 101.
