Solace Bands Took on a Giant…and Found its Niche
How do you thrive in a market dominated by an industry titan like Apple?
Solace Bands, a leading seller of smartwatch bands, did it by focusing on what matters most - creating a quality product at an affordable price.
According to Solace Bands co-founder Chad Held, that crucial combination - quality and affordability - helped Solace Bands carve out a niche between the low-cost bands sold on Amazon and Apple’s high-price options.
“Apple is the biggest competitor. They are the giant in the space,” Chad said. “But their bands are $100-$500. Then you have brands on Amazon that are $3-$10. Those probably aren’t going to last very long.
“Our bands are just as good as Apple’s,” he said, "They just price them much higher.” Solace Bands typically cost about $40 and come with an advantage no competitor can offer - a lifetime warranty.
“We stand behind our products,” he said. “We did iteration after iteration to make sure the strength of the product holds up and the look doesn’t diminish over time, like the cheaper Amazon bands do.”

Reaching a Million Bands Sold
Solace Bands launched in 2021 when Chad’s co-founder Kohl got a smartwatch for Christmas and didn’t like the band that came with it. When he started looking for alternatives, he saw a market opportunity.
“Kohl stumbled on this product and we knew we could make it better,” Chad said. “We became 50-50 partners, and never looked back.”
The company was cash-positive within months. To date, it has 350,000 customers and sold 800,000 bands. Chad expects Solace Bands to pass one million in Q1 of 2025.
Growth Metrics
- Founded in 2021; doubled sales month over month in 2022
- 350,000+ customers served. 800,000+ watchbands sold, aiming for 1 million in Q1 2025
- 850 SKUs with 150-200 more launching soon
Lifetime Warranty as a Major Differentiator
“We have tons of reviews on our site. Most of them talk about the bands,” Chad said. “But we have a huge amount that talk about our customer service team.”
“In the end, the customer is the most important thing. The product is second,” he said. “They are the ones buying it. They are going to rebuy it. They are the ones keeping your business afloat.”
A major feature of that customer-first approach is the lifetime warranty - a one-of-a-kind perk in the smartwatch band market.
“Many people end up using it, not because the band itself breaks, but maybe their dog gets a hold of it, or they lose a link to it when they’re putting it back together,” Chad said.
“We’re not the strictest people with it, but it obviously has to be a warranty claim. We give the customer the benefit of the doubt. They pay a small processing fee to cover our costs. We pay for the bands, and we’ll ship right out to them, usually the same day.”

The Perils of Facing Off Against Apple
The company faced a serious challenge in its second year. After setting up manufacturing in China, one of its original bands was relatively close in design to one Apple was selling.
“Our Hero SKU in 2022 was a product similar to Apple’s when they had their braided bands,” he said. “Ours was a different braided pattern, and with a different width.” But it was similar enough to push the founders to seek a legal opinion on the matter.
“We talked to attorneys to see if we would win in court. They said, do you want to go to court with a brand as big as Apple? They’re just going to drown you in legal fees. Or do you want to change your hero product?
“We took the latter option,” he said. The company dropped its top seller.
Solace Bands had reconsidered their entire operation to determine which products would become their top sellers going forward. “We did end up turning it around. The Perma band on our website became our top seller for a long time. More recently, our Adapt collection took over.
“Customers love it. We’ve only been selling it for two months and it already became our best seller, in quantity and in revenue,” he said.
The Impact of Effective Inventory Management
With 850 SKUs and plans to add 150-200 over the next 6 months, keeping track of inventory can be a make-or-break proposition. “High points in the business are when we doubled month-over-month for an entire year, like in 2022,” Chad said. “And low points are when you run out of top sellers when you shouldn’t,” he added.
That’s particularly challenging during the busiest time of the year - from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, and well into January and even February. “People are getting Apple watches for Christmas. People are immediately looking for new watch bands. Ideally, our brand is top of mind.”
“Just keeping our inventory where it needs to be has been the most impactful.”
Finaloop’s Real-Time Reporting Helps Solace Bands
“Things change week-over-week, sometimes day-over-day - what our best seller is, what our inventory status is, ads, spending on Facebook, what platform spending is best for us,” he said.
“Back when we were using an accounting firm, we had to wait until halfway through the month to know our actual numbers. Today, Finaloop does a great job helping us keep our finances in check, day over day,” Chad said.
He noted that Solace Bands was a small team - just him, his co-founder Kohl, and several contractors. “You can’t have a full-time accountant on staff unless you want a big expense. So Finaloop does a great job keeping track of our expenses for forecasting that way.”
